Ingredients:

  • Chicken Wings. Look for meaty wings and drummettes.
  • Soy sauce. Lots of savory, umami depth and flavor. Don’t use low-sodium soy sauce — it won’t taste the same!
  • Rice Vinegar. Adds that tangy sharpness. Can be subbed with white vinegar.
  • Honey. For that irresistible sticky, saucy glaze.
  • Hoisin. A staple Asian condiment that lasts a long time. in the fridge. If you don’t have it, leave it out.
  • Sesame oil. Fragrant and nutty aroma.
  • Garlic + Green onion. The essential aromatics.
  • Chili Pepper. Adds subtle spice. Leave it out if you don’t like spicy.

Special Equipment:

I used my Cosori 5.8Qt Air Fryer (affiliate) for this recipe. But any air fryer should work.

What are Air Fryers? They are basically mini convection ovens. The removable food basket and small size circulate hot air all around the food — for a faster cooking time and crispier food, using less energy than an oven.

You can also cook Honey Soy Chicken Wings in the oven. It will take longer but the method is the same. Notes are in the recipe card below.

Instructions:

  1. Marinate chicken. Mix chicken wings and marinade into a bowl. Marinate for 8 hours or overnight.
  2. Air Fry chicken wings. Add half of the chicken wings in one layer, separated slightly from each other. Roast at 380F for 12 minutes total, flipping wings about halfway through. Repeat with the remaining wings.
  3. Baste with glaze. Pour the leftover marinade into a saucepan. Simmer until reduced to a dark, syrupy mass of flavor. Don’t skip this step! Brush onto wings for the most satisfactory, sticky-saucy-glossy glaze! Garnish and serve.

PRO Tips:

  • Don’t overcrowd the basket. The chicken wings need room to breathe, so the air can circulate all around. They can touch slightly but they should not be packed in too tight.
  • Brush on the glaze — several times! To get that shiny, lacquered coating that’s so delicious.
  • Garnish. Although optional, it adds color and freshness. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, green onion, or cilantro as a nod to the Asian ingredients in the marinade.

FAQ:

Can I make Honey Soy Chicken Wings in a regular oven?

Yes, definitely! Check out the instructions in the recipe card below. Conventional oven wings will take longer (about 40-45 minutes) but they will be just as delicious. All the other steps remain the same.
